Project Overview

Prometheus is our new member hybrid rocket competition team and is the natural pathway for members after completing RISE. In two academic quarters (~6 months), the team designs and builds a hybrid powered rocket to compete with at the Spaceport America Cup (formerly IREC).

Motivation

The team competes each year in the Spaceport America Cup with the goal of launching an experimental hybrid rocket to 10,000 feet. In aiming to win at Spaceport America Cup, Prometheus teaches members necessary engineering skills and the pride that comes with achievement.

Outcomes

In its first year, Prometheus won 2nd place at the Spaceport America Cup. In the first 3 years, over 10 static fires, 2 hybrid launches, and 5 solid test launches have been conducted. Prometheus has also served as a training ground for many of the current club leaders and has proven itself as able to successfully train students to work on the larger and more complex liquid system.

Direction

The goal of Project Prometheus is to educate new members on rocket engineering and cultivate their leadership abilities. As a team made up of mostly first years and transfer students, new members have the opportunity to step up and lead their own design and manufacturing campaigns.
